Apple has permanent employees, correctly paid, to fix bugs in drivers while not waiting for the "software department" of the hardware manufacturers to fix them. So the whole discussion about "INTEL NICs are better than Realtek NICs (meaning on Linux, on BSD, anything other than Windows)(***)(****) is viewed through a strange kadeiloscopic tube while the real issue is the delay to get decent drivers on non-Windows OSes.
Most of the network cards and switches use a very limited number of chipset for each type of product, see discussion there: viewtopic.php?f=171&t=45508 as an example. (**) Or shall we also say, in many/most(?) cases, the employees of big IT Kahunas who use the hardware/OS so have all incentives to *coughing* "contribute" to the community in a "we are never better served than by ourselves" smiling crocodile mode. Meanwhile INTEL and AMD are very slowly getting better. (*) NVIDIA is the worst special case Ask Linus Torvalds' finger. Then if they have time and the resources and if enough corporate customers (and data centers, same thing) bother them, they will make the Linux and BSD drivers, usually making (partially or totally) the source code OSS hoping to offload (partially or totally) the maintenance to OSS volunteers (**). The hardware manufacturers (including INTEL and AMD)(*) will first make and maintain the Windows drivers and associated firmware, otherwise Microsoft will kick their asses.
It's about the same thing on the Linux side. I don't use pfSense and I don't know how much their kernel differs from vanilla FreeBSD though.
